What is the Division Property of equality? Definition and Examples

What is the division property of equality? The division property of equality is the process of dividing each side of an equality by the same number in order to find an equivalent equation.

For every real number a, b, and c (c ≠ 0)

If a = b, then a / c = b / c

Example

1. 4 + 6 = 10, so (4 + 6) /  2 = 10 / 2  (or 5 = 5)

2. 4 - 2 = 2, so (4 - 2) / 2 = 2 / 2  (or 1 = 1)

3. x + 5 = 15, so (x + 5) /  5 = 15 / 5
