Definition of simplify in math


What is the meaning of simplify in math? To simplify a numerical or algebraic expression, you can replace the expression with its simplest name.

Examples of numerical or algebraic expressions that are simplified

1.

3 x 5 + 2 x 1 + 4 x 4 = 15 + 2 + 16 = 17 + 16 = 33

To simplify the numerical expression 3 x 5 + 2 x 1 + 4 x 4, you can replace it with 33. You can also say that 33 is the simplest name for 3 x 5 + 2 x 1 + 4 x 4

(y)(y)(y)(y)(y)(y) = y6

We can simplify the algebraic expression (y)(y)(y)(y)(y)(y) by replacing it with y6

3.

23 + -1(4 - 2) = 8 + -1(2) = 8 + -2 = 6

We can  simplify the numerical expression 23 + -1(4 - 2) by replacing it with 6. 

4.

x + x + x + x + x + x + x + x = 8x

We can simplify the algebraic expression x + x + x + x + x + x + x + x by replacing it with 8x.
